Last-Minute Tips for the IELTS Test – Speaking

There is no worse feeling than underperforming in a test that you've prepared so hard for. Take a look at these tips that could prevent that and also sharpen your skills at the very last minute before the actual IELTS Speaking exam.

Answer with appropriate length

In Parts 1 and 3, you only need to respond to what has been asked. Be careful not to give too much information! (TMI) After carefully listening to what is being asked, accurately answer the questions while limiting the length into 2 to 3 sentences, keeping your answer concise.

Use idioms & phrasal verbs

For getting higher band scores, your fluency matters. This means natural-sounding English expressions are necessities. You should be familiar with idioms or phrasal verbs (i.e. common spoken English expressions) and must be able to use them at your disposal confidently.

Take full advantage of the time given

In Part 2, you should take full advantage of the 2-minute response time when answering with ideas related to the topic. It is recommended that you keep going until the examiner stops you.

Avoid minus factors

You must try to speak confidently. You should be careful to not to take too many pauses to think and not to make your answers deviate from what is asked because they will be common targets for deduction.
